Roger Ebert debuts "new voice" on Oprah
At the Movies began as Sneak Previews. It debuted in Chicago in 1975 and was hosted by then-dueling Chicago newspaper film critics Roger Ebert and Gene Siskel. The program moved to syndication in 1982 and made both hosts, as well as their signature "thumbs-up/thumbs-down" rating, Star Trek Enterprise dvds, famous.
Ebert and Siskel co-hosted the program together until 1999, when Siskel died of complications from brain surgery at 53. Chicago Tribune critic Richard Roeper took over Siskel's spot the following year, and the show was renamed Ebert & Roeper.
