The first season of HBO’s
Game Of Thrones on dvd has reached its completion, though I’m still having a hard time believing that it even existed at all. HBO took one of my
favorite fantasy novels, a book that while well written, belonged to a genre fairly or unfairly associated with socially awkward asthmatic nerds, and turned it into
a critically successful series that has only gained viewers as as it wore on. That kind of start to the 10-part series was essential because Game of Thrones is a
complicated story with numerous characters and a dense, interwoven back-story. Though it demands attention,
Game Of Thrones dvd never once bogs down. It’s the kind of drama
where, when the first episode ends, you wish the nine others were immediately available. And that validates HBO’s notion that television is the perfect medium for a
fantasy series done right.
