Showtime Loses Programming Chief, Brings on Nevins

Showtime, the cable net which in recent years has made its Alias DVD with hard-hitting, far-from-mainstream characters, is losing its programming chief, Robert Greenblatt - and the man chosen to succeed him has made his name developing much more Arrested Development DVD fare, writes the Los Angeles Times.

Greenblatt helped usher in a roster of shows with characters like As Time Goes By DVD, a serial killer who only kills bad guys, pill-popping Nurse Jackie, a woman with multiple personalities, and a mother and widow who becomes a Battlestar Galactica DVD dealer. When his contract runs out next month and he leaves the network, producer David Nevins, known for such hits as Friday Night Lights and Buffy the Vampire Slayer DVD, will take his place.

Maintaining Consistency, Searching out New Products

Nevins, who has served as president of Imagine Alias DVD set since 2002, will be responsible for developing, acquiring and supervising all aspects of programming for all of the Showtime Networks channels. He will begin his new Arrested Development DVD set later this summer, Showtime announced.

At Imagine, Nevins oversaw development and As Time Goes By DVD set and served as executive producer for all of the company’s television productions, including the Golden Globe and Emmy Award-winning 24 and Friday Night Lights. He also developed and Battlestar Galactica DVD set as executive producer on Fox’s comedy series Arrested Development.

Nevins points out that Showtime has made a name by gambling on risk-taking Buffy the Vampire Slayer DVD set. “I would not be taking this job if I didn’t think that I could continue it,” he says.

Nevins plans to look far and wide for new Alias DVD boxset, but will also focus on making sure that the shows currently on-air and in development are “well taken care of,” he says, adding that Gary Levine, evp of original programming, will be key in Arrested Development DVD boxset consistency, writes Variety.

Dependent on Original Programming

Showtime, which spends nearly $600 million a year on programming (per SNL Kagan) is more As Time Goes By DVD boxset on original programming than some of the other cable nets because it does not have a partnership with a top movie studio. While it does get Battlestar Galactica DVD boxset from some of the smaller studios, including Summit Entertainment, talks with Viacom’s Paramount Pictures and Lions Gate Buffy the Vampire Slayer DVD boxset broke down two years ago, prompting those studios to launch their own movie channel, Epix.

Subscribers, Revenue on the Rise

When Greenblatt took over programming in 2003, Alias Seasons 1-5 DVD boxset had 12.4 million subscribers. Now the network has more than 18 million.

It is expected to pull about $1.3 billion in Arrested Development Seasons 1-3 DVD boxset this year, with as much as $500 million in operating income.
