The Halliwell sisters aren’t returning to your TV set in new adventures but they are coming to a comic book store near you.

Charmed revolves around three sisters who discover that they are actually witches with magical powers. After the death of their grandmother, the beautiful Halliwell sisters Prue (Shannen Doherty), Piper (Holly Marie Combs), and Phoebe (Alyssa Milano) reunite and discover they are the strongest descendants of a long line of witches. The three use their powers to rescue others from evil supernatural forces until Prue is killed in battle.

It’s then discovered that Piper and Phoebe have a half-sister named Paige Matthews (Rose McGowan) who also has powers and joins their fight. Other recurring characters include Whitelighter Leo Wyatt (Brian Krause), police detective Darryl Morris (Dorian Gregory), and half-demon Cole Turner (Julian McMahon). The final episode, “Forever Charmed,” aired on May 21, 2006.

Zenescope Entertainment recently obtained the comic book rights to the series and has announced plans to publish a new Charmed comic book series. Fans will be happy to know that one in the team behind it already has some experience with the Charmed characters.
Paul Ruditis and Raven Gregory are set to write the comic series. Ruditis has written two Charmed novels, Leo Rising (with Constance M. Burge) and As Puck Would Have It, as well as books about TV’s Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Roswell. Gregory meanwhile is the author of The Gift and the Wonderland trilogy from Zenoscope. They’re teaming up with artist Dave Hoover, who has provided artwork for Captain America and The Wanderers.

Of the new Charmed series, Zenescope editor-in-chief Ralph Tedesco noted that, “The key to this series success is to strike a nice balance in creating a brand new, intriguing storyline for fans of the television show while also not alienating comic book readers who haven’t really followed it before but might want to now that it’s a comic.”

He continued, “The great thing is that Paul and Raven have done just that with this story arc. Anybody will be able to pick up this series and follow it whether or not they ever watched the show before. Moreover, fans of the show are going to be thrilled when they see where this story goes.”

While the TV series was challenged by casting and budget limitations, the Charmed comic creators won’t have those problems. As a result, fans may finally see the return of popular characters like Prue and Cole.

The comic book series will follow a new storyline that picks up where the television series left off in 2006. A June release is scheduled for Charmed issue #0 and the debut of issue #1 is set for July at Comic Con International in San Diego.
