| Subject: After 50 Shots in Harlem Mon Aug 09, 2010 5:27 pm | |
| The shooting began early Sunday in Harlem, a wild 50-shot gunfight between the police and a lone gunman after a crowded, late-night outdoor party in a park had spilled into the morning and the streets. apparently struck the gunman, who was expected to survive. Two officers were slightly wounded; one of those officers, who was in a plainclothes unit, had been shot in the chest by another officer. The wound was superficial, but could have been far worse had the bullet not struck the officer’s bullet-resistant vest. Police officials said that shooting probably resulted from an errant bullet, not a case of mistaken identity. Three more people, believed to be bystanders, were also hurt, although it was unclear who fired those shots. Police officials said the officers’ use of force appeared to be justified. Paul J. Browne, the Police Department’s chief spokesman, said that one or more of the five responding officers had seen the gunman, Angel Alvarez, 23, fatally shoot another man, and that Mr. Alvarez had begun the gunfight with the police. Yet questions were being raised among some witnesses as to whether the police had acted appropriately. Although police officials said that Mr. Alvarez shot and killed the other man, Luis Soto, 22, and that they recovered Mr. Alvarez’s weapon at the scene, several witnesses said that neither Mr. Alvarez nor Mr. Soto had been armed. Shariff Spencer, 28, a friend of Mr. Alvarez’s, said that Mr. Soto and Mr. Alvarez had been fighting atop a car, then tumbled to the ground and were quickly surrounded by police officers. ____________________ Doctor Who Season 5Doctor Who DVD Box setDoctor Who DVDSaw DVD Box setSaw Series 1-6Britannia High DVD Box setTrue Blood DVD Box setTrue Blood Seasons 1-3True Blood DVDMiami Medical DVD Box setMiami Medical DVDUnited States of Tara DVD Box setUnited States of Tara Season 2 DVD | |
